Last week I lead a developmental reading of a new musical about the history and culture of Nantucket called Nantucket the MusACKal here on island. We had a great bunch of actors and there are some really incredible, catchy songs that I've been hearing around town since the presentation. It has music and lyrics by Matt Savarese and Jeff L-E and a book by Ryan Runstadler. Look out for more news in the future!

I'm thrilled to announce I'm directing this show that opens in less than a week at the inaugural edition of the Broadway Bound Theater Festival. It's an exciting, complicated play about moral relativism and what people will do for their families. Come see what happens when a Texas high school football coach, facing enormous pressure to win at all costs, must decide what's more important: his ethics or his job.
We only perform three times: Sunday, July 30th @ 6:30PM; Thursday, August 3rd @ 4:00PM; and Tuesday, August 8th @ 7:30PM. We're at the 14th Street Y. Tickets for all three shows are available here and are $5 cheaper in advance! It's gonna be incredible and I'm so excited to get to show it to an audience! Come check it out, and take a look at some of the gorgeous and talented people bringing it to life I've just come off assisting on a reading of Fireflies by Matthew Barber at White Heron in Nantucket. The reading featured Marsha Mason and Judith Ivey and was a great start to the 2017 season! Look for the play at Long Wharf in the fall!
After many months I'm getting ready to open Rootless, a new site-specific, traveling, outdoor play about home, heritage, and what it means to be caught in between the two. Rootless is currently in production for a fully-realized production in Wagner Park June 3 and 17, 2017. Written by Sara Lyons and directed by yours truly, performances each day are free and take place at 1 pm and 3 pm.
Rootless follows Jenny on her journey to find what she’s lost. When her late grandmother’s comb is stolen from her by some reckless boys, her friend Murray jumps in to help her find her comb, her roots, and herself. Dance, music, and the magic of our surroundings carry us with her on a site-specific journey to meet an exciting ensemble of characters, including a mysterious woman who’s always just out of reach. Who is she, and what does she hold in store for Jenny? Join us to find out! Take a look at the facebook event for more information! I've recently returned from assisting on this beautiful new show at Long Wharf and tickets are available here for the run through May 28th!
"From the brilliant minds of The New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik and award-winning composer David Shire (Academy Award winner and multiple Tony and Emmy nominations) comes a joyful new musical about a tiny family restaurant. David Kaplan is a chef’s chef, making beautiful, simple food of uncompromising quality in his lovely Union Square restaurant. He and his wife Claire have made the restaurant a welcoming one for their friends and family. But in the crowded, cutthroat and expensive Manhattan food scene, is that enough to survive and compete with the next big thing? Enter Sergio, an old friend, rival, and possible savior. This hotshot celebrity chef has offered David a chance to give his restaurant a make-over. Will David sacrifice his pride (and perhaps his happy marriage) to save his beloved little restaurant?" I've recently finished assisting Aaron Latham on Lyle Kesler's Orphans for Room 15 Theater Company. It's playing at the Bridge Theater at Shetler Studios on 54th St. It's a small intense drama with plenty of twists and some laughs as well. We've just extended for an extra performance due to popular demand! Tickets are available at www.Orphans17.com. Running through Sunday, March 5th!
It's been a great fall, that was spent in large part working on shows for Long Wharf. First was a workshop of the new musical, Table, in November which I'll be continuing with in the spring. Then I went up to New Haven to assist artistic director, Gordon Edelstein, on Endgame starring Brian Dennehy and Reg E. Cathey. The show is nearly sold out but still running through February 5th and well worth the trip!
It's great to be back on Nantucket for a third summer with the White Heron Theatre getting ready to open their brand spanking new theater building! My first show of the season with them was a reading of Napoli, Brooklyn, by Meghan Kennedy on which I assisted Gordon Edelstein, of Long Wharf Theater. It's a great big difficult play and we had some pretty fabulous actors including Edie Falco. Next on the bill out here is assisting on The Velocity of Autumn by Eric Coble directed by Skip Greer. It opens the 29th of July and runs through August 14th, so if you find yourself in Nantucket (or on the cape or vineyard, close enough to ferry!) stop by and see it! It's a rich, dense, little show and I think the Nantucket community is going to really enjoy it and connect with it. Go to http://www.whiteherontheatre.org for tickets to the entire season!
It's been a busy spring, first directing a workshop of a new play by Gary Jaffe called Song to the Moon at Shetler's Theater 54. After three intensive weeks of putting the show together with re-writes, staging, and exploration we put the show up on its' feet for a weekend of feedback from friends and family. Here's a preview of what it looked like! After Song to the Moon, I headed off to New Haven to assist Kathleen Marshall on a new musical called My Paris. It was a great experience on an incredibly exciting new show about Toulouse-Lautrec.
Returning to Bad Theater Fest for the second time after my last show for them, Please Pass the Salt, was named Best of Fest.
This show, Palingerie by Gary Jaffe follows the story of a playwright who finds a pair of Sarah Palin's underwear and discovers that he can control her world. It's going to be a crazy show and I hope you'll come join us! Click here for more info and the festival's website! |
